Women of modern era face double standards and unrelenting pressures, trying to guide them around ‘rules’. It is okay for men to burp, scratch, not to take a shower or clean their house. But can you imagine a girl doing these sorts of things? Duh! Of course not, and not because its un-lady-like but it’s considered gross for a girl to do so. Unfortunately we the Women’s have to deal with unsolicited advice thrown at us, from all the directions that are usually contradictory to each other.
Daisy Bernard, a UK based journalist, and a fashion illustrator recognizes these paradoxes and in a series of artwork very powerfully shows how pathetic these thinkings are.
1) BE BOSSY BUT BE WOMAN FIRST
Many companies hire women employs assuming that she will leave her job once she’ll have children. But on contrary society considers a woman who chooses her career before children as “Selfish”. Also, people believe that women have no ability to lead and are often instructed to “Act like a man” or “Be Bossy”. People often deem a successful woman as having “Slept her way to the top”.
2) BE FAITHFUL BUT NOT TOO EMOTIONAL
The society expects more from women than men in a relationship as they are considered to be “more emotional”. Thus women end up be too attached to their partners and termed as “an emotional psycho”. On contrary women who know how to control their emotions and are self-dependent are called as “cold”.
3) NEITHER TOMBOYISH NOR TOO GIRLISH
Women are always expected to look their best but still receive criticism. As women who wear t-shirts and jeans all the time are termed “too basic” and regard tomboyish girls as “one of the boys” and are rarely seen as romantic partners. But double standard prevails when girls who are ultra- feminist are considered as “too girly” or too” high maintenance”.
4) DRESS UP NOT TO ATTRACT BUT TO BE COMFORTABLE
When a guy goes out with a girl and has sex, they are widely praised for it. But if a girl does the same she is termed as “whore” or “slut”. It is always expected from a girl to look “sexy” and wear clothes that attract men. But society contradicts this fact by saying “girls should cover up” herself completely as it distracts men.
The easier way to deal with these Double Standards is to realize that your loved ones will always accept you for who you are, regardless of your circumstances. Also one needs to overcome such judgment and love themselves for who they are and take pride in being one.
